What Did Abraham Kill On Mt. Moriah? Taught by Rabbi Emeritus, Rabbi Michael Oblath
Saturday, September 19, 2020 • 1 Tishrei 5781
3:30 PM - 5:00 PMThe Akedah is one of the most powerful stories that we have in the Tanach. And, of course it would figure, it is also one of the most problematic, paradoxical, and challenging narratives to boot. No matter how it is explained it seems that each interpretation leaves us with more challenging questions. It forms an integral part of our Rosh Hashanah liturgy...a source of multiple sermons, articles, and books. Many have entered the fray with the given that God is actually putting Abraham to a test, the basis of which is not clear at all when stated to Abraham. It is a test, nevertheless. So, the initial entry into the attempt to understand the story is based on the simple question, "does Abraham pass the test?"
We will enter with the same question, after some introduction. And we will end with the same question. In between, we will study the text, see how it is interpreted by the rabbis of old, through to modern interpretations (disturbing as they may be), and do a thorough study of the language of the story. What did Abraham kill? Well, he has several choices. We'll see.
