RELIGIOUS SCHOOL

"To see the world through Jewish eyes" means that from early childhood, a youngster experiences Judaism by touching, seeing, hearing, tasting and smelling the richness of our heritage. Congregation Beth Sholom's School for Living Judaism is based on the premise that "it is not the learning that is the essence, but the doing." A child learns Judaism, not as a concept or abstraction, but by active participation in things Jewish, at home, as well as in the synagogue. Only then does Judaism become a reality.

Our Religious School students, from kindergarten through B'nei Mitzvah (usually 7th grade) meet every Sunday morning from October through May. High School students meet with the Rabbi on Sundays during the school year. We also provide learning opportunities for preschoolers and families.

The URJ CHAI Curriculum is designed to facilitate lifelong Jewish learning within Reform congregations. It focuses classroom learning on Torah, Avodah (prayer) and G'millut Chassadim (acts of lovingkindness) and expands beyond these topics in other educational programs. The lessons aim to nurture "enduring understandings" -- values that have lifetime meaning for Reform Jews.

"We believe that every child who comes to a Jewish school should find a home in Torah. In each grade there will be Avodah, prayers and rituals that celebrate and commemorate the joy and the power of choosing to live as a Jew. We believe that every child who comes to a Jewish school should be at home in a sanctuary and should be able to make her or his home into a sacred space. In each grade there will be g'millut chassadim, opportunities in and out of the classroom to make the world more just, more whole and more holy. We believe that every child who comes to a Jewish school should live what he or she learns and should practice what we preach and teach."
