TALMUD STUDY
Our weekly Talmud study class will be held at noon on Fridays at the synagogue.
The group at present is a small yet dilegent group of knowledge-seekers, meeting in the synagogue library to study passages from the Talmud. Instead of studying a particular tractate in the Talmud, we are studying particular sections of the text. Shulchan Aruch. The Shulchan Aruch (a set table) was composed by Josef Caro in the 16th century in order to bring some order and categorizing to the otherwise free associating Talmudic texts. It presents each topic in a much more organized fashion, without the seemingly random discussions of the Talmud.
We have decided to study the texts that teach about life-cycle events in Judaism...their traditions, rationale and significance...and are currently diving into the traditions relative to marriage. Please join us as we study the words, times and philosophies of our rabbinic teachings. Bring a lunch, stay a bit, discuss and learn and apply these ancient teachings to our modern times. Hoepe to see you there. Fridays at Noon.
EVOLUTION OF JEWISH TRADITIONS AND BELIEFS
OR
What Else Would YOu Be Doing on the Second Saturday Night of Each Month, huh?
Our traditions and beliefs have changed considerably since biblical times. As we have learned, Rabbinic Judaism (what we practice today) had a particular approach to the Bible, oftentimes totally reinterpreting what the biblical authors had written and, indeed, were talking about at all. But, our traditions have changed over the centuries, evolving to the multiple observances that we have in Jewish life today.
We will attempt to answer these questions during the year's adult education, Second Saturday Night program. As this is a fairly broad topic, it will be broken down into two sessions this year, fall and spring. In the fall we will explore the traditions involved with our major food-frenzy holidays; Passover, Hanukah and Tu BiShvat...but with an initial session on kashrut.
As with last years Bible Stories adult education program, we will meet on the second Saturday night of each month, beginning in October. Classes will begin at 7:00 PM and will meet according to the schedule indicated below.
As was the case last year, please be sure to bring your biblical texts if you have one. Other materials will be provided as necessary. As will child care.
Fourth Erev Shabbat Sermons
Join us to discuss the development of Reform Judaism in the early 19th century, its spread into the United States, the challenges it faced as well as initial responses. At the same time, we will look at the underlying principles that tend to govern the approach of Reform to our civilzations's traditions.
Then, as a tantalizing tidbit, on October 23, we will look a theological genter issues. Is God male or female? And, just what in the world is "Shechinah" all about?
