Havdallah in the Hood

Havdalah in your 'Hood

Congregation Beth Sholom is having a year of Havdalah parties from Indian to Eagle River. All congregants are invited - some of the evenings are geared towards children, some for adults only, and some for the entire mispocheh.

Due to space limitations we are asking that everyone RSVP. Once you have signed up you will be sent directions to the hosts' homes. These parties are potluck and the hosts have set the themes. Please RSVP to sholomalaska@aol.com.

We are scheduling for the entire year so there may be changes and additions. If you are interested in hosting please let us know.

Here is the tentative schedule.

July 24 - Lower Hillside 'hood - Susan Mermelstein and Paul Nagl -5:00 PM

Help us make a Jewish home! Come celebrate as we hang the mezzuzah on our new home, then stick around and enjoy an Alaskan summer evening with us. Up to 20 guests, all ages for a vegetarian finger food potluck.

October 9 - Eagle River ‘hood - Robin Dern and Michael Frieser - 6:30 pm

Pajama Party - Come in your PJ's to a Shabbat good-bye party! Smell the spices, watch the candle shine, sing with Rabbi Oblath and Michael and munch on cookies and milk. Before everyone heads home to their pillows, we will end with a very special bedtime story told by Anchorage's own Havdalah Hershel. Those that choose to attend this party can be young or simply young at heart but there is only room for 36, so rsvp early.

November 20 – Muldoon ‘hood - CBS Harry Potter Havdalah The Secret Society of Molohs invite those able to decipher the message below to join in for a magical evening of ancient ritual and to help as we conjure flames to lift the spell of Shabbat. Professor Snape and Albus Dumbeldore will be on hand to lead us in a game of Human Chess, with teams chosen by our own Sorting Hat. After the festivities, we will all head to our respective modes of transportation (be they brooms, flying cars or chimneys) and make our way to the Century 16 Theater (aka The Ministry Of Magic) to see how our beloved Harry Potter fares with those Deathly Hallows.

All are welcome, but take heed

of what awaits those who don't rsvp.

For those who don't, they will not earn

a movie ticket or a chance to watch the candle burn,

So if you seek to join in the end,

You'll be told, "That's rubbish, be gone my friend"

Procrastinator, you have been warned,

all late responses will be spurned!

We must hear from you by no later than Hermione Granger's birthdate if you wish to take part. There of course is always a price to be paid when meddling with magic, in this case it is $10 per person, so head to your nearest Gringott's branch and make a withdrawal forthwith! If you have no owl to send, we will gladly take your response (and your money) over the phone (338-1836), via fax (337-4013) or you may post it to us at CBS, 7525 E. Northern Lights Blvd., Anchorage, AK 99577.

Please don't bother to come if you are not in sufficient attire. Take your fashion cues from the Hogwarts crowd!

January 8 - Indian ‘hood - Wendy Woolf and Pat Athey – 3:00 - 7:00

Winter Wonderland - come out early to go sledding, or skiing up Indian Valley, do Havdalah and then have a warm soup to send you on to a Shavua Tov. All ages welcome.
